Exploring the UCLH heritage trail

University College London Hospital

The rich history of University College London Hospital has long been kept secret, below its headquarters on Euston Road. Mash-design was approached to build a design tool to take a diverse range of people in the building through its remarkable journey to success.

Origins of the idea
The design layout took inspiration from historical images within the archives of the hospital. We paired distinct architectural features of the building with the archive images, providing the perfect storyline for visitors to understand.

A new sense of life
The visitor experience includes specific showcases designed to display iconic objects and documents and immerse the visitors within the space.

A clear strategy
We aimed to create a brighter and more inviting environment within the hospital and this was achieved by creating a simplified plan, whilst still showing off the heritage trail and the hospital's key moments up until the present day.

"I have commissioned and worked with mash-design on a number of high-profile patient-facing projects within University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and have always been delighted with the outcome. Mash-design's ability to develop a client’s brief into a creative idea that is deliverable and within budget always impresses me. The feedback we have received from both patients and staff on the design graphic projects has been excellent. I cannot recommend mash-design highly enough."
